Cheyenne

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate student at the University of South Florida, holding a BA in French with a minor in Linguistics. I am currently working toward my MA in French, with a long-term goal of achieving a PhD in the subject and becoming a French professor.

I have studied French for eight years, while tutoring the language for four years with students ranging from ages 6-40. Though French is my preferred subject, I also enjoy tutoring my native language, English. I have a strong passion for spreading the knowledge of languages and helping others to discover the beauty of linguistics and communication.

As a student myself, I understand the importance of making tutoring sessions entertaining. It is my philosophy that sparking an interest in the subject will allow students to better comprehend the material. I often include fun activities, games, and speaking exercises into my lessons in order to enhance comprehension and conversational fluency. Tutoring is also a learning experience for me, as I plan to have a career in teaching. I want my students to attain knowledge they can use in real life, be it a conversation or a stepping stone for further education. For this reason, I frequently ask for feedback to ensure that the teaching style works for that individual.

What is your teaching philosophy?

An essential aspect to learning is interest. I feel that if a student is exposed to the interesting aspects of a subject, the student will be more likely to succeed. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to help students find that interest and use it to help them succeed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I may ask the student questions about their background with the subject, specific goals/concerns, and their interests in the subject in order to assess each student's individual need.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I encourage independent learning with phone applications, workbooks, and online resources.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated by keeping my lessons interesting, and by checking in with students throughout lessons to assess comprehension and interest.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would ask questions to understand why the student is having difficulty with the skill or concept, and use my own resources as well as outside resources to practice the concept with the student. Following that lesson, I would quiz the student on the skills to assess their comprehension.
