What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that every student is extraordinary. Everyone should have the mindset of everything is possible through hard work and commitment.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself to the student and ask them to introduce themselves. I would then review the things they need help with and let them know success is possible.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By letting them know that they are 100% accountable for their success in life. If they believe in themselves and their abilities to succeed, they will. They must take ownership of their success and life.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By letting them know that whatever they do is a step forward for a great and successful life. They must take the right action and make the right decision now to succeed.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would let them know they are smart and everyone struggles and it is not unusual. I would repeat the lesson again and understand how they best learn. I would learn about their learning style and use a teaching methodology that fits it. I would use visual and audio materials, and also use games to help them learn the lesson.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
In order to become a good reader, you must write about something. Also, you must connect what you read to what you are passionate about. If your passion is sports, then you should start reading about sports. You should start with simple and easy to read articles in order to build vocabulary.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found building trust between me as a teacher and the student are very important. It is also important for me as a teacher to believe in my students and be proud of who they are.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would focus on connecting this subject to something they are passionate about. For example, if they are struggling with computer code, I will ask them if they like video games. If they do I will explain how video games are programmed, and then help them build their own game.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I will build assessment tools as well as simple quizzes to keep students engaged and to test their understanding of the materials.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I will do so by helping my student understand they can succeed if they focus their energy in this subject and if they believe in themselves. I will also tell them how learning about this subject will help them achieve their goals and follow their passion.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By asking the students questions about their favorite courses, what classes they struggle with, and what areas they think it is difficult to succeed at.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I will first understand what type of learner my student is. Is he/she a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner? I will then adapt my teaching style and materials to their learning style.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use visual materials, music sometimes, quizzes, online articles, and games.
