Milan: Warrenville tutor

Certified Tutor

I recently graduated from Saint Louis University with a major in Health Management and a minor in Biology. Along with taking courses such as chemistry, biology, psychology, molecular biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, algebra, and sociology in high school, I have also taken them again at Saint Louis University. This has allowed me to develop a complete understanding of these courses. Not only have I completed these subjects, but I have excelled in these courses as well. Also, I have taken the MCAT and the GRE, which has further solidified my knowledge in these subjects. While having a good understanding of subject matters is crucial, one must also be able to explain each topic of the subjects to all levels of students in order to be a successful tutor.

I learned how to communicate with students ranging from middle school to high school when I started volunteering at North Campus. North Campus is an organization focusing on academic enrichment of children through assistance in after-school activities. The program allows students to improve areas of weaknesses so they can strive to be a well-rounded individual. My goal was to be a positive role model in their life and help them with whatever homework they had. Volunteering here has showed me that each student learns differently and once you understand them you can find ways to help them learn. As a tutor I am patient with students and I understand how to assist them no matter what level and I will motivate them to achieve their goals.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to be patient and assist students to achieve the highest that they can by understanding how each individual learns.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would want to find out about what subject he/she needed help with, and more specifically what topic he/she needs guidance in. After this is determined we can go over the topics to understand the student’s strengths and help him/her gain an understanding of the parts that are challenging the student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving students confidence is the best way to help them become independent learners. I will help them understand the material and make them answer questions so that they understand the process so they can do this for all their classes.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Giving students a multitude of tasks to learn the material helps them stay focused and not get bored. Also by making it a competition students are motivated to continuously do well.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will be patient with the student and make sure they have a basic understanding of the topic and help them build their knowledge. Sometimes it takes different approaches to a concept that different students understand in their own way.
