What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that each person has their own way of learning, whether it is visual, audio, reading, or with music. I feel that patience is needed when finding out how the student learns. We all learn differently and at different paces.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Helping students to learn to use the resources that are available to them help them to become independent. A student must learn their unique way of learning, and using the resources available that feed into this is important.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Keeping a student motivated is with praise and making the learning fun. While there are subjects that are not fun, it can be made fun, such as making key words into a song to remember or by using mnemonics.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would encourage the student that there are times when learning certain subjects can become hard. And as a nursing student I can relate to this very well. The key is to find something that makes it click, such as flashcards, mnemonics, key words, songs, etc.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would see where we could work out what is wrong, such as pronunciation. Maybe they do not know the meaning of the words; then we can look up the word and use other ways to help learn. We could even practice spelling if needed. We could also read the sentence. And I could have the student repeat the sentence, and then tell me what they just read, and then try to explain it back to me. If needed, we could repeat until the student comprehends and can teach back.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that teach back is very helpful. This is when the student can teach me what they just learned. If they can comprehend and teach back, then the work is being absorbed. I also feel that flashcards or videos can also help with student success. It all depends on the student's ways of learning and comprehending.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would get the student wanting to learn more about the subject while engaging in a game about the subject. This can make it more fun and enjoyable, and at the same time the student is learning. Learning can be fun; I want to make it fun and engaging at the same time.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

The technique that I would use would be teach back. This is when the student can teach back what they learned. This is a good way to know that the student has learned the information, and not just memorized a list of words.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Building a student's confidence is key in learning; this can ensure that the student is learning and wanting to learn more. I could enforce the learning with positivity as the student succeeds throughout the experience.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would determine a student's needs by assessing how the student learns and what it is that is needed to be learned at the time.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would assess how the student learns, and from there I would adapt my tutoring to the student. For example, the student is a visual learner. I would encourage the student to make flashcards to help with learning. I would also encourage the student to learn the pictures that are in the textbooks, and encourage them to use other visual resources, such as helpful videos on YouTube.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I would use all resources that are available. This would include the student's books, additional library books if needed, flashcards, a tablet or computer to watch YouTube videos, pencils, pens, highlighters, and tabs for marking pages.
