I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I'm freelance mobile developer. I've been tutoring for the past 6 years in math, reading, and computer science topics. I like tutoring math and computer science courses the most because I'm constantly using those skills and would love to stay up to date. My style of tutoring is to relate information to things they like to do or doing hands on projects. Most of the things I'm "good" at I learned to the beat of some song. I truly believe that anybody can be good at any subject if you just find an easy way to learn it and I try to find that connection and use it. When I'm not working I play video games, read, listen to music, or explore new restaurants.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Find things students love or can relate to and they will learn the information better.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Have a casual conversation to learn more about them, and tell them a little about myself.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Show them the tools they can use to learn independently that fit their learning style.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Take a break and think of a new way to teach it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Take things slow and show patience. It helped me when reading was made to sound fun.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Openness, honesty, and faith. Most students don't believe they can do things, but if you show them that they can do it, and honestly mean it, that student will believe in themselves as well.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I'd try to get the student to relate the subject to something they enjoy so that they get excited about learning more.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I try to relate material to things students like or I'll recommend resources that fit the students learning style.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By encouraging them that they actually know the material through examples.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask the student to show me some previous work or working out a problem from their needed material. If it seems they are missing a previous topic, I'll ask for them to solve a different problem about the topic.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I try to see how the student is learning and then switch my style to fit the student instead of them trying to adapt to me.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Any assignments students have and any references I might personally own. If I know there is other material I might need I will try to borrow it from the library or buy it.
