Graziella: Winchester tutor

Certified Tutor

My goal is to assist students with their assignments and studies in order to help them reach their educational potential and goals during their career as students and beyond. I love teaching and feel deeply privileged to be able to help students and continuing to learn myself. My method and approach to being a great tutor and educator is that first I love teaching, and second is that I plan ahead for my lessons. I have been working as a tutor and as a substitute teacher in Central Ohio for the last two years with great success, and throughout these past two years I have decided to change my career path from nursing to teaching full time. I will be starting my MA in teaching in July of 2016.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Listen to every student so that I know where they are coming from with their studies and how we can build on that to achieve their education potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask the student where is the biggest struggle, and go from there according to lesson plans and materials.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching the student how to outline their study materials in order for them to become more efficient.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By working on material the student knows and enjoys, so that we can build up their understanding to a level where we can increase difficulty and interpretation.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

By outlining the lesson and breaking it down into sections, the student is able to place pieces of a concept together for better understanding.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By teaching them how to outline and underline important information, so they can make their reading more efficient and learn how to identify crucial lines and words that need to be understood in order for a text to be interpreted correctly.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Definitely working on areas the students enjoys most before approaching daunting subject areas.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By introducing an activity or an interactive video, or even images that allow the students to relate to the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Quizzing the student right after covering the material, repetition methods, and mixing up questions and phrases.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By asking what they know, starting out simple, and mixing up the simply with the more advanced subjects.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

An initial quiz or even simple questions allow a teacher and tutor to get an idea if the student knows the subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By breaking their lesson down and allowing the student to voice an opinion about their lessons.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books, lesson plans (personal, and student's), videos, worksheets, and notecards.
