What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I look forward to making introductions during a first session! I think it's important to establish a good relationship with the student, to get a clear understanding of what the student would like to learn and accomplish. This helps to ensure the tutor and student are on the same page moving forward, and have the best chances for success!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A student perhaps most importantly needs to be able to articulate what he/she needs to work on and would like to improve. A student is often the best judge! When a good base for learning is established by the tutor, a student should be in a good position to continue and enhance the learning experience. Identifying areas for improvement is the first step in the independent learning process.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Learning should be fun! If a subject seems to be getting too repetitive, it's always a good idea to vary the teaching and learning style to keep the student (and the tutor) engaged!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

It's equally important to reinforce what has already been learned, as to move on to learning new things. A review of concepts or ideas is always a good idea, to make sure the base of knowledge remains consistent!

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Tutoring is sometimes just as much about teaching the tutor as the student! It's important for the tutor to always be open to adapting teaching styles or mediums to make sure the student is benefiting as much as possible. Each learner is different, and it is up to the tutor to make sure the student is fulfilled during each session!
