What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in not only providing a sound theoretical basis when it comes to teaching but, more importantly, a practical level of applying what we learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session with a student I would assess where the student is in the field of study. I would try to determine what are the student’s strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the subject matter. I would also try to determine what kind of learner the student it. What is the best approach to absorbing the subject?

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help the student realize the progress that he or she is making on a daily basis. Celebrate the small successes.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A student becomes an independent learner when he or she gains the confidence that any barrier can be overcome with a can do attitude. It is the small victories that help change the mindset and remove the fear, which most of the time is what keeps us from taking the initiative to move outside our comfort zone.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I try to break down into its simplest components. Sometimes viewing a problem or issue or questions as a conglomerate of smaller pieces makes it much easier to handle.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I try to have the student read about something that they have a true interest or passion in.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The best strategy is to figure out what type of learner the student is. Secondly is to find out what motivates the student. Also important is to find out the student's strengths and weaknesses.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would break down the material down to its simplest components and then take baby steps with it. Learning any subject is like learning to walk.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I emphasize the small victories. If you have enough small victories, you eventually win the war. I help a student see that he or she can master any subject with a little will power and plenty of steadfastness.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I see where the student is lacking, and then try to focus on that area.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I try different techniques and approaches until I find one that eases the student's learning process and pattern.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use what the student has to offer. I also supplement that with my own readily available material, or material that is available from different online sources.
