If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Listen to the student explain why they are having difficulty. Sometimes a student believes they are having difficulty with the material when, in reality, they are having difficulty with the teaching style and methodology.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Every student can succeed with the right resources.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Listen, deduce and respond.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Allow the student to come to the solutions with my guidance instead of just giving the answers.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Show them their progress and celebrate every step of the way.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Suggest books that talk about their interests.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I actively listen, I attempt to deduce what the issue is, then I respond.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I find that human beings learn best by playing games, so I would attempt to make a game out of the learning material.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Open-ended questions, short quizzes and practice questions.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Showing them their progress and celebrating the small wins. I often tell students they don't always have to hit a home run. If a team gets four base hits the effect is the same.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Active listening.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By making available as many resources as I can.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The Internet, books and games.
