How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would focus on basic concepts in each step of our study. In the tutoring session, I encourage her/him to follow me holding pen and paper, and doing it for herself/himself. I share with her/him different ways of idea grasping and concept retention.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Personalized approaches, as everyone is different…also in learning. Focus on concept retention as it leads to independence, and subject mastery.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know each other, focusing mainly on school, the subject to be tutored, the student's expectation from me and the tutorial in general. Then if he/she is ready, start the tutorial.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I will try different ways, as it’s subjective and one of them will work. For example, making her/him grasp the skill or concept at hand by doing many similar examples, or starting over from the basics that lead to the concept, and easing into it.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would encourage them to re-read their favorite stories, books, comics ... reading of any sort. I then prepare comprehension questions from them, which they could answer at ease. Doing this now and then would increasingly make them comfortable with other reading comprehension tasks too, as they develop the necessary skills to do so from their preferred texts.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
-
Understanding the student, weaknesses, strengths, interests... and following a personalized approach accordingly - Consolidating the concept or skill at focus with ample examples - Continuous encouragement and progress follow-up, and actions according to feedback seen or received from the student
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
-
I would take a subject he/she is comfortable with, and devise ways to approach the subject at hand from the student's strength on the former - I will motivate her/him with real-life applications of the subject, relating to the lesson-area in discussion when possible - I will try my best for her/him to score better results, that would in-turn motivate her/him to start enjoying the subject - I will start from what he/she already knows, the basics, and smoothly add new concepts
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Based on his/her learning styles, academic achievement, interests, and daily routines.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I focus on the main course book of the student, and prepare supplementary elaborations and examples. In addition, I continuously update myself with what the web offers for each session. Of course, the type and usage of materials depend on the student's needs and level.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
-
By making him/her master the lesson/subject at hand as achievement is key to motivation. This may not come overnight, but progress, albeit not so big not so fast, would definitely let her/him stay motivated - By relating a subject/lesson to the environment he/she lives in and his/her experiences with it's day-to-day(real-life) applications - By making him solve additional problems (than covered in a class), and help him to be confident in a subject
