Shannon: East Orange tutor

Certified Tutor

I recently moved from Southern California to the Spokane, Wa area. I got my Ca teaching Credential from University of La Verne in La Verne, Ca. During this time I worked for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Conejo Valley. I implemented many of my lessons that I created during school in the Boys and Girls club. For student teaching I taught a 2nd grade class and then a 5th grade class. After graduating and getting my credentials, I subbed for two different school districts and was able to do four different long term subbing positions. After the 2014-2015 school year, I also ran my own summer school class teaching 6th, 7th and 8th grade math using the ENgageNY math. I moved to Spokane in Oct of 2015 and started subbing for the Mead School District.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe all students learn differently at different speeds, and my goal is to find the way each student learns and teach to their potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session is always about finding out where the student is in that subject. I will present a questioner about how they learn, what they like to learn and a few questions on the subject that I am tutoring to find out where I need to start with the tutoring.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I am all about guiding the student to come up with the right answers. I will take the student step by step, let the student learn from their mistakes and set goals for the student.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The student and I will sit down at the second session and talk about goals and rewards. A reward could be a game the student likes to play, that has something to do with the learning, but I believe rewards will always keep students motivated to learn.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student is having a difficult time learning a concept, I will first try the same concept with a different approach. For example, if I am teaching just auditory and visually, then I will change my way of teaching to kinesthetic. If that does not work, then I will take the lesson a step back and find out where the student is having a hard time.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are many strategies that I would use to help students with reading comprehension. I would try and relate the subject to something they already know. I will ask questions throughout the reading to make points of the story, and have students make inferences in the story, just to name a few.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to find out exactly where the student started to struggle. For example if the student is having a hard time with long division, I will go back to multiplication to make sure they have a strong foundation there.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would start off with a game that is a little lower than their level to make them feel confident and happy in learning.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would give the students simple assessments before moving on to new or harder materials to make sure that the student understands.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Rewards, games, fun activities, and a lot of praise will help to build a student’s confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would give my student an assessment, starting with basic questions and accelerating to more difficult questions to determine a student’s needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would make a lesson easier or harder, more direct instruction to more independent work, depending on each student’s needs and goals.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Pencils, papers, erasers, a deck of playing cards, manipulatives depending on the subject, and computer/internet if possible.
