I enjoy working with students. Every student is different.
Understanding their motivations and their goals helps us to focus and develop weaknesses into strengths.
I feel pride when students who felt that they were unsuccessful at a topic blossom into confidence when they have mastered it.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning is all about making connections between what you learn and what you already know, and what you are curious about.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student, her family and diagnose what issues she is having in learning.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Model effective learning. Not just present facts, but show how she can discover pertinent facts and methods for herself.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Always be positive. "You have the right general approach, but is there another way we can ...?" Be generous with praise. Point to connections between the topic and the student's interests and goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break down the topic into components. Diagnose difficulty and focus on exercising that topic until the student has regained confidence.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Encourage them to look up words not understood. Explain the Latin or Greek roots of technical terms. Show the relationship new words to words they already know, e.g., umbra and umbrella.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Understand the student's motivation, goals and interests. Connect the topic to these.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Break topic into subunits. Let the student gain success in the subunit(s) they struggle with to gain confidence.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Student exercises/projects. In a 1-1 situation, have the student explain their thinking as they proceed.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Small successes, growing larger.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Dialogue with the student and parent, and observation of their work.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

My PowerPoints. Topical exercises. Web sites if appropriate.
