What is your teaching philosophy?

As a teacher, I should be able to find the tools, resources and skills to reach every student in order for them to improve in whatever they are learning so they can become successful in life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would have a small conversation. Try to find out where they stand as far as the subject; when I have an idea, then I give them a pretest and start from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Showing them where they can find help, instead of just telling them what the answer is. Asking them guided questions so they can reach an understanding if they are right or wrong and why.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Finding out what interests them, and looking for resources that can help them learn and at the same time are fun. Giving them support when they think they can't succeed.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try to use visuals, graphic organizers, or give the information in another way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Demonstrate some reading strategies that they can apply to the reading to make it easier for them and more fun. Highlighting, circling, looking for bold or italic text, pictures, titles and unknown vocabulary.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Show them that we care, listen to their needs and support them when they need it. Find what the best learning style is for the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Start talking about what they already have achieved, making them feel like they already are progressing and just need to put some more effort in, and they will reach the goal.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Post tests, assessments, exit slips, reviews, and wrapping up each lesson with what they have learned.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

They can do some independent work and check with the computer if they are right.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

First knowing the child's background. Then, if they have special needs, applying what is required from me so that they can be met.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Maybe some students require more challenging activities than others, or less challenging, more specific and detailed.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Notebook, pencils, computers, drawings, readings, math and any other visuals.
