What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in helping the student get to the answer rather than giving it.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

With encouragement and reminders that this is just another step towards their goals.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

We would try find something that they like within the subject or relate the subject to some of their goals.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would present practice problems that cover all the materials that they need to know. I would also have them walk me through a couple of problems.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start from easier problems, and work towards more complex problems so that the student can gain confidence along the way.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Discuss the student's needs at the beginning of our sessions. As the sessions go on, I would build a more comprehensive understanding.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would tailor it to each student's needs, changing techniques that they do not respond to and developing new techniques as I go along.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

During in person sessions, I typically use paper, pen, pencil, and a calculator. If the student has their homework or classwork that they would like to work on, we will use that. If not, I will provide practice problems.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

We will talk about what the student wants to achieve over the course of our sessions, as well as setting goals for our sessions.
