Certified Tutor

I was a math tutor and Chinese language tutor at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD. Currently, I am studying Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. I've been tutoring math and Chinese for over three years. As Chinese and Cantonese are both my first language, I can help students who are learning either language to practice and help them understand Chinese culture to better grasp the language. Also, I enjoy tutoring math. I've been tutoring math for elementary school students, middle school students for over 3 years now. I don't only help students solve problems, but I also teach them new ways to think about problems. That's really important, because being able to think about a problem in different ways can help students solve more challenging problems by themselves in the future.

What is your teaching philosophy?

When you are learning, you are not just learning for learning's sake. You are learning because it is useful for the rest of your life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

To ask the student why he/she is learning what he/she is learning. Later, I explain why it is important for the student to learn, so that the student will get interested in the subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach them the way I think and understand the question. It's really important, because being an independent student means being able to solve a problem independently.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Underline what you read, circle what you find is important.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Get the student interested in what he/she is learning first.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Be patient with them; since they are interested in the subject, it's easy for them to find a good way to learn.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will ask them to explain the problem to me first, and then I show them the way I understand the problem.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice makes perfect!!! Practicing more in a subject is really important! It will help you work faster in exams, and able to find your mistakes and fix them.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

It depends on the mistakes that the student often makes. I will collect the problems and then discuss them with the student, so that the student will avoid making the same mistakes again in the future.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Find out what the student needs and where the mistakes are, then discuss them with the student so that I help the student improve by avoiding mistakes.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I will use the materials from the online platform and from the student's school.
