Certified Tutor

I became a tutor due to a love of seeing other people succeed and grow. For two years I taught Special Education in DC Public Schools, working with students aged three to eighteen. My teaching experience prepared me to overcome any obstacle in order to ensure that my students learn.

My love of teaching stems from a life full of literature: my father is a Professor of English Literature at the Catholic University of America. An English Major myself, I grew up with Dante, Shakespeare, Dickinson, and Faulkner. I'm pursuing a Master's degree at the University of Maryland in English Literature in an effort to achieve my dream of becoming an English Professor--no, the apple does not fall from the tree!

Outside of academics, I enjoy travel. I have lived in multiple Asian countries, and tromped through a large portion of Western Europe. In Fall of 2011, I studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain. Growing up in a Cuban household, my experience in Spain helped solidify my Spanish in both the Cuban and Castellano dialects.

I look forward to helping your child reach their goals!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Successful teaching hinges on three things: knowledge of content, student-teacher relationship, and preparation. If all three work together, learning and personal development will occur.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Each student is their own individual. First, I will familiarize myself with the student. I will ask her or him a variety of questions about their interests both academic and personal as well as what goals they want to achieve. From there we will map out a detailed strategy on how to reach those goals.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

My experience working with all age groups has shown me that consistency is key. The student and teacher must have a similar routine for the entire tutoring session. The development of a comprehensive tutoring regiment based on the target goals for the student will lead to the greatest growth and success.
