Jon

Certified Tutor

In high school I did 13 AP classes and passed all of the tests most with a 4 or higher. In college I attended the University of Miami in Management, Marketing and a minor in music business. I have run companies, managed artists, manage sales teams, developed sponsorship proposals, developed business plans, and utilized programs and social networking sites to create marketing campaigns for all of these. During my time in managing a sales office for 3 years I learned many universal principles to organization, motivation, and teaching. I have also won and competed in Business Plan competitions, elevator pitch competitions, and the International Poetry competition which was the focus of a 2008 documentary on HBO called Brave New Voices. Now, for hobbies I write lyrics and read a lot of books on motivation, leadership, sales, and mindset. I am constantly growing myself in my career and intelligence and I know I can inspire others to do the same in any endeavor.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Utilizing questions.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask how they like to be taught.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Use questions to allow them to get to the correct answer, utilize positive reinforcement on correct answers, and relate and do not belittle an incorrect answer. I am big believer that with persistence and the proper reinforcement any student can develop the confidence to be educated in any subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive reinforcement and encouragement. Emphasizing the fact that life is about progression, not perfection. In fact, schools systems which emphasize a growth environment over a pressure for perfection tend to show the best results according to recent studies.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Ask deeper questions to see where I may be failing in communication or where they are having difficulty in their understanding. Teaching is about patience and repetition just as much as anything.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I think it all goes to positive encouragement. It is a feedback loop of positive reinforcement that causes someone to build the confidence to do something long enough to get good at it. A human being becomes good and then great at what they spend their time doing.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Understanding their learning style; if they prefer to try and then be coached in areas that were incorrect, or if they like to be coached as they go through attempting a new problem. In my management experience this is known as learning by fire or by water. Know the learning style and you have that much better opportunity to give the student the desired results.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Celebrate little wins.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask questions constantly. Does that make sense? What do you think? Allow them to get to the answer themselves, and when you need to give directives, make sure they are understood.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive reinforcement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Asking the right questions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Depending on their learning style will determine how I instruct them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Pen, paper.
