How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Continue to reinforce the positive.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate through testing and basic review.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I discover their strengths as well as their weakness. From there, I shall guide them to use their strengths to bring up their weaknesses.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use their textbooks and supplements found on the internet.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Make the student want to learn and have fun at the same time. Education is needed, and having the student realize and desire to achieve more is important.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know the student. It is vital to learn his/her likes and dislikes.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The first step is to show them. I then have them try it with my guidance. I would then have them explain while I am there. Finally, I will have them work independently.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
When s/he is getting more answers right and realizing s/he is understanding the concept, a sense of pride sets in and motivation will increase.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I shall break it down into tiny steps. One quote says in order to fly, one must learn to crawl.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would have them start with basics and then have them practice reading in my presence.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found out the positive attitude is needed in all situations. Encourage their achievements and remind them not to give up.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would show them tricks to break down the problems. Sometimes learning positive shortcuts makes them want to explore other ways of making things easier.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would have them explain the problem to me, and then have them tested on the subject. I would make sure I am there in case s/he gets cold feet.
