Certified Tutor
Originally from Manassas, I graduated from the University of Mary Washington, first with my bachelor's degree in English, and then with my master's in education. I have been teaching elementary school here in Richmond for three years now, and I hope to use my experience to help new students with Varsity Tutors. I have always been a voracious reader, but I am also interested in science, math, and especially history. I'm very comfortable with all elementary subjects, from phonics to algebraic reasoning. My English degree came with a fair bit of writing, so I am also very comfortable tutoring both literature and composition.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy has always been a "breadcrumbs" approach--lead students in the right direction, but don't tell them what to find.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During a first session with a student, we will have to get to know each other! I will ask students to reflect on their abilities, and I might also work on some informal pre-assessments to see where we are versus where we need to be.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
A student becomes an independent learner when he or she is inspired to search for answers. I can try to make learning fun by creating lessons that are relevant to a student's interests, so that they actually WANT to learn some things.
