Juan
Certified Tutor
After graduating college in 2013 with an honors degree in English, I joined Teach for America in Memphis where I taught in public schools for two years. I am a state-certified teacher who has experience in public, charter, and private schools. I have elementary and middle certifications, as well as certifications to teach history and English at the high school level. I have also undergone numerous trainings in teaching both common core math and Language arts.
Passionate about educating kids, I understand the individuality of every child and structure sessions based on skill level and personal interest. Students leave tutoring sessions with renewed confidence and heightened engagement in their subject matter. My greatest strength as a teacher is being able to recognize prior knowledge, and then individualize my instruction to grow the child without any gaps in understanding.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that all kids have the capacity to learn at high levels. It is the teacher that must recognize their current level and then differentiate instruction to help the child grow. Through individualized instruction, a teacher can instill a passion for learning that leads to academic success.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In my first sessions, I will do two things. 1. Conduct a pre-assessment on prior knowledge 2. Learn about individual interests and passions, as well as areas of previous academic difficulty so as to customize the tutoring experience
