I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a certified secondary-level English teacher in Texas, and I have been tutoring and teaching for the past 10 years. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2012 with a degree in English education and minors in math and Spanish. In high school, I tutored at my local library and did assistant teaching in a local elementary school, and in college I tutored at the university in writing and conducted study sessions in Spanish. After I graduated, I taught ESL in a bilingual elementary school in Spain and tutored adults preparing for English exams. Most recently, I spent one year teaching in a private English academy in South Korea, and I have just recently moved back to Texas. I love being a tutor because it allows me to give personal attention to and completely focus on a single student, which traditional classroom teaching often does not. I believe that a solid education is necessary and that anyone can achieve as long as they put true effort into their work. When Im not teaching, I love to read, watch superhero TV and movies, and travel.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that anyone can achieve their academic goals as long as they are motivated and willing to work. Also, it's always important to get help as soon as you need it, whether it's from a parent, a tutor, a teacher, or even another student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Usually, I try to do a practice test or assignment to get a feel for both what you know and how you work. Then, we create a plan together for both how the lessons will be structured and what we will cover.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I like to show students that they can do it themselves, but they may not quite know how to at first. Once they get an idea of how to learn by themselves, I am there more to clarify and reinforce than to teach.
