What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I usually start off by introducing myself, telling them a little bit about myself, and asking about them. I like to establish a connection with my students.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I teach them note taking and studying skills so that they can learn and retain more of what they're taught.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd help them find reasons for continuing with what they're doing or help them set up a reward system of some sort for themselves.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I patiently go over it as many times as needed, approaching it in as many different ways as needed until we find an approach that works for them.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I find the root of the struggle, whether it is trouble with vocabulary, trouble with grammar, dyslexia, or anything else, and help them resolve that issue. Usually practice is the best with reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Finding their preferred learning method is always my first step; knowing whether I have a visual learner, a book learner or a hands-on learner helps me know how to help them.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I show them that they can do whatever they put their mind to and offer lots of verbal encouragement and praise.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I always try to relate the subject I'm teaching to a subject that the student enjoys or finds relevant to encourage them to engage with their learning.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I'm a big believer of practice, so I would have them do some problems based on what they just learned to make sure their comprehension is good.
