I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Ryan

Certified Tutor

I pursued my Bachelors at Loyola University in Maryland where I concentrated in philosophy, history, and political science. Following that I pursued a Masters at Fordham University for philosophy with a focus on 19th and 20th Century German Phenomenology. I am here to teach anything from the basics of high school study strategies to advanced studies in upper level college courses.

I have tutored throughout high school, college, and graduate school, with great success.

When it comes to my tutoring style I truly believe that if you cannot explain something simply, then you do not understand it properly. That is why I endeavor to give the most straightforward explanation possible. I am a firm believer in contextualization - most especially in history - as it offers a broader and deeper understanding of concepts, which allows students better recall ability. I am quite easy-going, but highly effective.

Apart from my foci in higher education, I specialize in persuasive writing and essay construction.

When I am not actively teaching, I am actively learning. I am currently working on a research project, an unrealistic amount of do-it-yourself projects, and a book. I love playing with and training my two dogs, hiking, and reading for pleasure.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I am willing to try any teaching technique as long as it helps the student. Stay organized, stay focused, and communicate.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Assess goals, learn about the needs of the student, lay out a plan of attack, and get to it.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Through trial and error in my own learning career, I believe that I have developed a comprehensive set of tools for independent study. Starting with the foundations of good studying practices, we can work up to the ability to write thesis-grade papers in any number of areas.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Hey, I've been there. Sometimes it's just tough to stay on target. I know that better than most! When things seem to stall I like to change tactics. Engage the problem from a different direction entirely. There is always some sort of progress to be made-- some other avenue of approach!
