Learning math is like being a detective. You have evidence and clues, and you need to solve the mystery by using the resources. My approach to teaching is learning math while having fun!!

A little bit about me:

I have an associate's degree in Business and working towards a degree in accounting. I enjoy teaching and I believe there is nothing more rewarding than sharing your knowledge with someone and to help them to succeed. I have been teaching since I was in high school (back in the early 90's) and currently teach few elementary level kids in my neighborhood. My favorite subject is Mathematics. It includes all types of Math such as calculus, trigonometry, algebra and etc. My philosophy in teaching is building the concepts in the mind of the student. Concept building is very crucial since it will allow the student to think in different dimensions, to be creative and ultimately to have fun with it!!
Apart from teaching and Mathematics, I enjoy the outdoors, 60's 70's and 80's rock music, cycling, hiking and movies. I am a fan of the NFL, World Rugby and Cricket. During summer I get busy with cricket since I play for a league cricket team in the DC metro region.
I am outgoing, easy to approach and will go above and beyond to help you to achieve goals. I enjoy working with numbers and I am sure with proper guidance you will start enjoying math, as I do.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Break the material down to the simplest form.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Learn where the student stands in their subject knowledge. Learn what they want to achieve. Learn their strengths and weaknesses.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Motivate them. Show them that the best teacher of everything is their own surroundings.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation never ends. Show them where they can end up if they are motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Use easier methods to teach them the concepts.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Asking them to highlight the important words.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Breaking down the concept to a level where they understand the idea.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By starting with something that they are not struggling with. The key is building confidence in them. Once you pass that level, it's easier to teach any subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask repetitive questions and ask them to show their work in the questions I give them.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By making them believe.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

This is the most important aspect of the job.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By understanding their level of grasping the subject material.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

A deck of cards, an abacus, and pictures. Except for a calculator, anything else.
