Sarah: Arlington tutor

Certified Tutor

I graduated with a BA in Liberal Arts in 2013 from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. I have a very well balanced educational background and a passion for learning that I think could greatly benefit others. I have been a tutor for high school students and a teacher's aide for elementary school students so I am also well prepared for a teaching role.
I am knowledgeable and ready to tutor in Geometry, Anatomy, Philosophy, and Psychology, but am very capable of tutoring in many other areas. My favorite subject to tutor in would have to be Anatomy/Physiology because I find the human body to be a fascinating machine. When I'm not pursuing more academic interests, I am either at my job as a pharmacy technician or out seeing live music/Pittsburgh sports.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that the most important thing in an education is the motivation to learn. If I can awaken within a student a passion for learning the subject matter, then the rest of the obstacles can be easily overcome.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help them find the appropriate resources for independent learning. There are a multitude of scholarly websites and local opportunities to further any student's education.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would check in frequently during tutoring sessions to make sure they aren't getting overwhelmed or confused. It's very easy to lose motivation when you feel like you're in over your head.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would figure out their most effective learning method and cater to that. I would also try to connect any concepts to real-life examples.
