Oscar: Lemont tutor
Certified Tutor
I am a passionate ESOL and Spanish instructor specializing in the interactive, communicative approach to learning language. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Education Foreign Language with 11 years of experience. I have had the pleasure of teaching everyone from kindergarteners to adults. I love teaching, and seeing the improvement my students make through their lessons with me is invaluable.
I specialize in teaching English and Spanish as second languages. Through the use of stimulating activities and student-centered methodology, you can learn and have fun during my lessons. I will personalize materials based on your learning style. I sometimes assign homework in order to help my students practice their new language, and provide periodic assessments to check their progress.
I want my students to enjoy my lessons and want their parents to be satisfied with my service, so I often ask for feedback.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you improve your confidence and grades in English or Spanish.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Every student has the ability to learn. It's my job as a tutor to identify the student's learning style and what is needed to build the confidence to excel.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would use a variety of different activities to find out the student's level of knowledge, what interests him/her, and what the goal of tutoring is.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Provide activities that make it fun to learn a new language, and in turn, the student will become interested in finding out more on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Using different resources like worksheets, videos, songs, and real-life examples, etc., help students not get bored with language and apply it to their everyday experiences.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would provide more examples and opportunities for practice.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
First, I would give students short texts about subjects that interest them. Then, I would coach the student in reading sub-skills such as scanning and key word identification.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would assess the student's current level and then give the student activities where she/he will be successful to build confidence and reinforce prior knowledge.
