Stephanie
Certified Tutor
I am excited to be a tutor and help students understand subjects they are struggling in. I have a younger sister, so I have always helped her with homework. My teaching style is more hands-on with explanation; that way, the student has multiple ways to understand the material.
I can easily relate to students because I am one, too. I understand that everyone learns things differently. I don't believe there is such a thing as a bad question. My main goal is for the student to understand the material and use it to his or her advantage.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is no two people learn and understand information the same. That is why students need to be tutored in a way that is best for them.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself and make sure they know if they have any questions to ask. No question is a bad question.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help them become an independent learner by doing hands-on learning. This would allow them to master skills themselves, thus becoming more independent as a student.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student stay motivated by reminding them how far they have already gone with their education in life. Once that huge foundation is realized, adding a few things to it comes with a lot more ease. Once a student realizes that their potential is infinite, they realize the motivation has been there the whole time.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would break it down step-by-step, and help the student grasp the definitions and orders of the individual steps and sub-concepts, to make the bigger picture seem like an easier concept to grasp.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would have them explain what they are reading to me.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Make sure to let them know that if I need to slow down or explain something in a different way to tell me. I want them to know that I'm here to help them understand what they don't.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would make it fun somehow, by either creating some kind of game or song to help them remember certain things.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would make sure they can easily explain the subject we are talking about well. This way, I know they aren't just saying they know the information I know.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By making sure to motivate them by saying good job and letting them know they are doing better.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By having them tell me step by step how they are working something out. I would make sure to notice when they took the wrong turn when figuring something out.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Based on how the student learns, I will either do hands-on by using the whiteboard or drawing it out in person. If they understand more verbally, I would make sure to explain it to them.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use scratch paper, whiteboard, calculator, questions, and a pencil.
