Certified Tutor

After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Colby College in 2007 with a degree in French Language and International Relations, I jumped on a plane to Uganda in pursuit of a less conventional office. In the years since I have lived, worked, traveled and taught on rivers and in classrooms around world.

As a teacher at New River Academy from 2010-11 and World Class Academy from 2011-14 I introduced students to the world of English Literature inside the classroom and mentored them through challenges and intricacies of living and traveling with a small group abroad, encouraging them to find ways to pursue their passions. My time with NRA and WCA furthered my belief in the value of experiential learning, and my view that education should be holistic and foster creative thinking. It is one of the reasons I am most enjoy tutoring, as it provides the ability to work one on one and to shape education to the needs and interests of the student.

While I tutor a broad range of subjects, from Spanish to test prep, it is literature and writing that I am most passionate about as I feel they provide individuals the opportunity to connect with the world around them and give shape and voice to their experiences and opinions.

Outside of education, I pursue whitewater kayaking competitively, and was a member of the US freestyle team this past year. When not tutoring or in a kayak, I can usually be found outside, running, surfing, hoola-hooping, doing yoga, or reading in a hammock.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to try and have fun with education. I love finding ways of relating information I am learning back to my life and the lives of my students to try and make it relevant and meaningful.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My focus in a typical first session with a student will be taking the time to get to know them and their learning needs and goals. The first session is the perfect opportunity to start a dialogue to figure out what motivates and challenges my students in order to build a working relationship with them; they are the ones doing the learning, I am just there to facilitate it and make it easier or more enjoyable for them.
