Certified Tutor

I am a 20 year old who enjoys critical thinking and analyzing situations. That being said, I enjoy chess and mathematics for the simple reason that I can apply the practices I learned in both of those in real life. Currently, I am a college student at Brooklyn College majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Music Technology. As a Computer Science major, I've come to appreciate languages like XHTML, CSS, Java and Processing and while I know how to code in C++, I tend to stay away from it because Java has spoiled me with the lack of pointers and no need to deleting allocated memory. As for the music technology aspect of myself, I just enjoy producing beats from game music already created.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By encouraging them to apply the question to a situation that they would be interested in.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By constantly encouraging them and providing necessary assistance so that they never feel neglected.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to turn the question into something they are more familiar with in order to make the connection easier.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I assess the problem and try to resolve it by moving along at their pace. Then, when they feel confident in their abilities, I'd bring them up to speed.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Finding out what their interests are and relating the problem to said interests.
