In my tenure, I've gained valuable experience as a teacher in the Social Studies department, as Dean of Students, and currently as an Athletic Director and Assistant Principal. As a highly proficient teacher, I created an atmosphere of engaged learners who were open to discussion and saw potential within. I established a student centered classroom rooted in rigor and creative student expression. As a coach, I've witnessed student athletes shine on the soccer field and basketball court while embracing the values of hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
As Dean of Students, I've led staff in professional development focused on the every day positive interactions imperative for student growth. Through collaboration with staff and students, I've helped facilitate a culture and climate that aligns with the ideals of the PBIS model. I truly appreciate the diversity and culture I experienced in Chicago Public Schools and know that I have learned so much from students and staff in that fast-paced urban environment. I'm currently in a more rural setting in Michigan and am grateful to have this experience and opportunity as well.
I believe in reaching student potential through progressive and creative pedagogical practices. I believe a well-rounded high school experience can help shape the lives of young adults and that those experiences and memories are extremely important for their future. It is the job of the administrator to ensure the structures are in place for the goals to be met. I am a strong proponent of Character Education and the lasting relationships that arise from teachers and administrators who genuinely care for their students. I believe an administrator should be visible and open to input, while possessing the flexibility to adhere to forward thinking shifts in educational practices. An administrator should foster a love of learning for students and challenge staff to grow in their practice while holding them accountable to a high level of expectations.
In my opinion, tutoring should follow the same foundations I've listed above. As a tutor, it is my job to engage and individualize instruction for each of the students I work with. I believe in a gradual release of responsibility by which an end goal is student ownership in their education and engagement in the practice. To me, another goal is to foster an appreciation of knowledge and needed skills in and out of the classroom. I believe this is accomplished through building a relationship (with students and parents) that is grounded in trust, care, and the willingness to improve (tutor and student). Learning is a process and I'm excited to be part of it with you!
