I'm originally from Cape Elizabeth, a small town in Maine just south of Portland. I went to the west coast for college, Pomona, and came back to serve in an elementary school with AmeriCorps and work for a bit. I currently teach chess to elementary schoolers with an after school program and with Mad Science. My likely major at Pomona is Science, Technology, and Society, which is essentially the study of science as a social institution. I am pursuing a career as a teacher or a science writer, perhaps both. I used to work in a children's museum in Maine as well for two years, so I love working with kids. I love reading, anything outdoors--hiking biking, skiing, backpacking. I love traveling, and am interested in languages. I've studied Spanish for five years and started studying Russian. I used to play chess a lot when I was younger and still enjoy it. I'm curious about things and like fun science facts. I have experience tutoring high school chemistry, precalculus, SAT, AP Statistics, college macroeconomics, but am capable of tutoring many others. I'd say science and espaol would have to be my favorite subjects to teach.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I think teaching should be about showing the student how to take their next step so that when their path is complete, they can look behind them and do it again. I think modern learning tools are quickly changing the way we process information, causing the old professorial model of lecture-notes-test-repeat to give way to engaging practice, where students are continually engaged in the material they are learning and its significance. The role of a teacher or a tutor should be to help the student make those connections, with the material and the world around them, and to adapt to each student's learning style in a way that allows them to integrate the knowledge into what they know already.
