Certified Tutor

I am a recent graduate of UC Irvine with a bachelor's degree in Biological Science. Having always been fascinated with wonders of how the world works, I naturally enjoyed learning math and science when I grew up. My interest eventually lead me to do really well in math and science, and I hope to continue pursuing higher academics related to these fields.

My fondness for tutoring comes from the fact that I love to share knowledge with people. I enjoy seeing others improve or even become inspired because of my teaching while simultaneously knowing that I contributed to part of their success and fulfillment. My students have been satisfied with my tutoring because I know how to align myself of the the pace and the thought processes with theirs as I break down heavy concepts. I tend to transform abstract ideas into tangible pictures relatable to our day-to-day experiences that makes students easily grasp and become impressed with the concepts in their mind. I also built really good rapport with my students, and this is important because they became comfortable in repeatedly asking the same questions when they do not understand something. The more they ask, the more I carefully assess and attend to the nature of their inquiries.

I specialize in one-on-one tutoring in general chemistry, general physics, and math of various area that are at high school level and below. At UC Irvine, I have also contributed to peer tutoring in creating questions for review packets and study outlines for review sessions for our sophomore organic chemistry class.

Moving away from college now, I wish to continue helping students with math and science as I prepare for my career to be a physician. I am very committed to my students because I know how much grades mean to them. It is not uncommon for me to stay up late with my students when they cram for that big exam. I am always willing to offer help because I understand the feeling of need while I was a student myself!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I never believe any concepts are too difficult to learn, but only the means with which the information has been taught. There are no hills too steep to climb, but only steps that are too tall to make.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to get to know my students first and minimize the gap between the tutor and the student. Building a good rapport with the student helps them communicate more effectively and helps the tutor understand their needs better.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I encourage students to think on a problem without help first. I also tailor and organize homework problems that increase in difficulty by the appropriate level, which helps students independently pick up small but fundamental concepts a step at a time.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The best way to be motivated is to gain interest in the subject, and the way to gain interest is to make that subject relatable to the person. I like to transform abstract, intangible concepts into examples or anecdotes that are visual and relatable to our day-to-day experience. We tend to be impressed by information that is immediately related to us.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would allow the students to express their thoughts first and assess which teaching approach may not be fitting for them. Having narrowed down the problem, I would repeat the teaching using alternative approaches until the students improve. Many times, cutting down the pace and the size of information being taught also helps.
