I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Salut! Hello! Ciao! I have just graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison where I earned a Master’s in French language and literature. I also taught introductory and intermediate French classes for two years at the university. Because University of Wisconsin, Madison places a heavy focus on second language acquisition research as well as pedagogy, I have been formally trained to teach for the modern student who requires classes that are tailored to their own interests and needs. I feel that my experience allows me to understand firsthand what instructors are looking for and what students need. I have experience teaching and tutoring students of all ages Italian, French, and English . My love of learning about other cultures and my time abroad (two and a half years in France, one year in Italy) has made me well versed in current Francophone and Italian culture and language.

I look forward to meeting you!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching is about listening to your student, understanding their needs, and inspiring them to reach their full potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to see their goals for the classes, what their learning style is, and what interests them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I think one of the most important things is to explain "why" rather than "what." I like to teach learning strategies.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I think a lot of times students lose motivation when they feel overwhelmed or frustrated. I think helping students create manageable goals and expectations will help them stay motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try different teaching methods: What kind of learner are they? Do they do better with hands-on activities? Do they need to work better with diagrams? I am happy to try whatever works.
