William

Certified Tutor

I'm very passionate about everything I do, which helps me bring to the table a lot energy and willingness to try several angles to convey the message to my students. I'm very patient and compassionate, as I have tutored all ages including teens, young adults, and adults. I have been tutoring on and off since 1995, working in Ghana, Togo, and the United States. Coming from a very diverse professional background with experience in manufacturing, banking, and trading, I have, over the years, been able to relate and connect subjects like math, accounting, and French to actual real life events for my students. Also, as a working father, student, and soccer coach, I understand the struggle of working around conflicts in schedule, and I try to be very flexible.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Relate the course to the student's daily life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Listen to the student express his/her shortcomings in order to have a better understanding and provide adequate assistance.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Find what makes the student tick and what can trigger them to be self-motivated.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Keep on pushing the student's trigger point.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Be patient and encourage the student not to doubt himself/herself.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Associate various techniques to make the student understand what he/she is reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Listening to the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I'll always look for cues to come up with something fun the student likes, and relate the math problem to him/her.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Make the student explain the problem to me in the way he/she understands it. Then, I provide them with corrections in a positive way.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Make the student feel comfortable with expressing his/her difficulties, avoid being judgmental, and show empathy and compassion, as well as eagerness, to help the student.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Through listening and probing questions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It's based on the individual; everyone is different, and therefore learns differently.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The subject book, the Internet, and other visual aids if or when applicable.
