What is your teaching philosophy?

That each student has different needs, and through hard work and dedication, we can reach their learning goals.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find out their typical learning habits, their learning type, and their needs and interests.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By letting them come to answers themselves, through research and some guidance, as well as working on their time management and study habits.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Praising their good work or their work effort and connecting the topic with their personal interests.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Approach the skill or concept a different way, or several different ways until they understand. I would also provide outside learning guides that might explain the skill in a new way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Practice outside reading assignments by reading books they're interested in and by helping them understand what parts to focus on while reading, so they can get in the habit of looking for themes and other important aspects of the story.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know the student on an individual level so you can help with their individual needs better as well as building a rapport.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By connecting it to a subject or activity they're interested in. Also it's always engaging to play learning games for candy.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Periodic testing of the material, and having the student explain the material back to me in their own words.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By praising work well done, and showing them their progress based on grades and differences in self tests or homework.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Through observation of their learning progress, their grades, how well they can explain a topic, and their basic organization.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By incorporating the medium they learn best in more often into my teaching, and by explaining topics based on how the student understands past explanations best.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper and pen, an iPad or computer to show supplemental videos, and a dry erase board.
