Michael

Certified Tutor

I recently graduated from Cal Poly SLO with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. I am currently working for one of the biggest aerospace contractors in the world. Aside from the exciting field of aerospace, the past years in college and high school have also given me the experience to teach and improve others - whether it be through tutoring agencies or study groups with friends. I find it extremely exciting to see others learn more, realize their full potential, and I'm always striving to a facilitate their "aha!" moments. With a strong background in math, physics, and programming, I believe these things are not just for one's career but to share as well! Past clients enjoy my teaching style where I try to look at the same problem through different combinations/aspects to ensure full understanding. Furthermore, if all of my past students were to describe my tutoring style in one word it would be.. FUN!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Break complex problems to smaller, manageable chunks by creating steps that a student is capable of doing.

Look at the same problem with different/challenging variations to ensure the student is aware of how complex a problem can potentially be.

Provide real-word connections to the subject matter in order to motivate students that these concepts aid in the future!

Provide study sheets that encapsulate information in one easy location.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Learn more about a student's interests, goals, and study habits, pinpoint concepts the student is unsure about, go over their schedule for upcoming tests, etc.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Provide study tips that I've gained in both college and high school that I've found extremely effective.

Create not solutions, but steps towards the solution that a student can refer to and utilize as a tool to solve problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Instill in them that these classes are beneficial in the real world. Sharing my industry experience in them can help motivate and spark students to excel in class.

Continuously encourage the student by making problem solving a sort of game!
