How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Examining the student's personal interests to help them make a connection.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use questioning for feedback, and taking time for review. I would also provide an opportunity for the student to ask any residual questions they may have regarding a concept.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Providing positive reinforcement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Observation, as well as oral and written assessments.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Highlighters, pens, pencils, dry erase markers, dry erase boards, chalk tape, construction paper, writing paper, leveled books, software, post- its, stamp pads, stamps, flashcards, blocks, and sometimes games.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Taking an opportunity to get to know the students and their interests, and observe their learning style.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Constructivist. I believe the children should have an interactive experience with learning. As a result, I always try to provide a practical application that will reinforce the lessons.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Providing a scaffold of support to what they know while guiding them towards new knowledge.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Through providing statements of positive reinforcement such as “good job" and “I like" statements. I can also enthusiastically answer questions they may have.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find out where they are struggling and show them what they may need to know to help them get past. Example, if a child is struggling with a vocabulary word, I would break the word into prefixes, suffixes, and apply key terms to help them remember it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Provide simple strategies in the beginning and ask key questions as we do a read aloud.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

SQ3R, modeling for the student, scaffolding previous knowledge, and providing an opportunity for independent work.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt through rigor and pacing. When I see that a student needs more review on a concept, I provide more applicable lessons until they can work through a concept with either no error or self-correction. I also provide a challenge to students that may need extra expansion on a concept.
