Certified Tutor

I recently graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biology and a minor in Anthropology. After graduation, I took the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and began applying to medical school. I moved to New York City in early August where I am currently working as a Research Assistant at Columbia University Medical Center while I continue the year-long medical school application process. I look forward to matriculating into medical school in Fall 2016.

As an undergraduate at Emory University, I was motivated to share my passion for math and biology with others in the community, so I became a Teaching Assistant for a basic health education course and an introductory biology lab on campus; I also served as a tutor for Emory Reads, a campus organization that tutors underserved elementary and middle school students in math and reading. The most rewarding and exciting component of tutoring is exposing students to new fields and instilling the confidence in them to explore subjects areas that they may not have considered to be their strength.

Patience is one of my key attributes as an individual, and this translates perfectly to my role as a tutor. I will not give my students the answers to their questions right away. Instead, I will guide them along the right path so they can arrive at the correct answer by themselves. Giving away answers robs students of their valuable opportunity to grow as a learner by making connections between different concepts, integrating them, and applying them to a particular question. Students always walk away from tutoring sessions with more confidence when they arrive at the correct answers on their own.

In my spare time, I enjoy exercising and supporting my hometown Atlanta professional sports teams; I am an especially enthusiastic baseball and tennis fan.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My goal is to get students to make connections between multiple concepts and apply them to the more complex questions that test critical thinking and reasoning skills. The best way for students to reach this level is for me to guide them without giving away the answer. I believe it is very beneficial for students to struggle through questions since that is when the learning process occurs. My job is to keep students on the right path.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself and get to know the student so I can connect with them. I would also assess my students' needs to find out which specific content areas they need help with. I would achieve this by asking them what they feel like they need to work on, as well as by asking them to answer a few questions from different content areas.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help the student by making them realize the importance of working through problems on their own. It is certainly appropriate for students to ask for help when they are stuck on a question and in need of guidance to set them back on the right path, but many students simply just want to know the answer to every question. This practice completely compromises their ability to genuinely learn the material and apply acquired knowledge and skills to tests, which they have to take independently. As a tutor who guides students but does not quickly provide answers for them, I would instill the virtues of patience and determination. It can be disheartening for students to spend a lot of time on a single problem that they cannot find the correct answer to. So, it is important for me to support students along the way and help them realize that they are learning even as they struggle through the questions.

Students must also understand that genuinely learning the material takes a significant amount of time. Therefore, I would also encourage students to set aside a generous amount of time for studying and reinforcement each day. I would be happy to assist students in devising their own personalized study schedule.
