What is your teaching philosophy?
I think the best method is to establish an understanding of concept and then apply this knowledge to practice questions.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would outline concepts and then proceed towards practical applications (exercises, practice problems, etc.).
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I think independent learning stems from personal enjoyment from the subject. So, I would do my best to make the subject seem exciting and interesting to the student. Sometimes, a new perspective goes a long way!
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would motivate my student through encouragement and consistently demonstrating to the student that they are progressing! Nobody is good at something the first time. The key to success is persistence.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would break down the skill/concept into basic components and go through problems in a step-by-step manner.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would give students tips that I use when I read.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I start by reviewing the concepts and seeing where their comprehension begins and ends.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I try to relate it to things relevant to his or her life.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would do practice problems together and then have the student go through a novel practice problem independently. Also, I would ensure they understand by always asking them if they have questions.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would help them build confidence with constant encouragement and reaffirm their progress.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs by asking them about their confidence and history in previous concepts and evaluating their ability to go through practice problems.
