I am a middle school social studies teacher in the DC metro area. I have been living and teaching here for five years. Originally from Pennsylvania, I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in American History and Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh then proceeded to graduate school also at Pitt. I earned a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in secondary social studies. In addition to teaching history and civics, I am also endorsed in middle school mathematics and regularly tutor students from my school through an after school tutoring program. I have also taught math during summer school and have found that I am a very adept at helping students who struggle in math.
When I am not working, I enjoy running and biking, cooking, and exploring the great city that I am lucky enough to live next door to. I have coached the girls track team and played co-ed recreational softball. I love pets and volunteer with the local animal welfare league when I have time.
I have an effervescent personality and genuine love for life. I love working with children and seeing them be successful is one of the most rewarding aspects of my life. I believe in fostering strong relationships with students, especially in the middle school years, because we all know just how tough they can be. Often students need someone else that they can lean on for academic and emotional support. I look forward to working with your students through Varsity Tutors!

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that students need to "buy into what you are trying to sell." To accomplish this, you must relate to the student and draw connections from the content you are trying to teach and real world examples. As all learners are different, different connections will work for different students. As a teacher or tutor, I establish this personal connection with each student to help them reach their goals.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
It is very important for me to get to know the student. As mentioned in the previous question, if the student does not feel cared for or know that you are invested in their success, they are less likely to achieve. I would also do some baseline assessments to figure out the student's strengths and weaknesses.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Becoming an independent learner has a lot to do with confidence. When students are assisted and experience success, their confidence will build. I feel it is important to build this confidence in students.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I am a "big picture" person. I like to influence my students to think about what they really want out of life and how they are going to get there. I've found that many times it helps to remind students of how every test, course, or school year is a stepping stone to their ultimate goals.
