"Shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you will land among the stars." There is no goal that cannot be reached and as someone who used to once struggle with school and taking tests I know how true that is. I love being a tutor because there is no better feeling than helping someone understand a concept and - beyond that - giving them the confidence needed to succeed. As a current nursing student, I utilize all of the same skills I hope to impart on others: study habits, organization, and test taking skills. I have always loved helping others and being a tutor is another great outlet for me to able to do so.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Keep it relevant! Anytime you can relate information or concepts to real life, you can open up an entire different kind of understanding.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to spend the first few minutes talking a little bit about ourselves and breaking the ice. After that, we go straight to work, and I try to identify where the student may be having difficulties.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching things like organizational skills and study habits, you aren't just helping a student learn a subject, you are actually showing them how to teach themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Confidence is key here- when a student begins to feel like they have a good grasp on the content, they are learning. And especially after they do well on a quiz or test - they are unstoppable!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I try to change my approach and present it in a different way. I also try to use different methods such as using videos, pictures, text, etc.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Helping students identify what type of learners they are is so important. I didn't even realize that there were different types of learners until I got to college, and having that knowledge changed the way I approached studying radically.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

If you can take the fear out of a subject and relate it to real life experiences, then your student will absolutely connect with the material.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I quiz a lot throughout the session, so I will be explaining a concept, but I will toss a question in there to gauge understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Confidence comes with understanding- I always encourage my students to talk through everything because if you can explain it out loud- you got it!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

You have to start by listening to what your student says, which can sometimes get lost in a classroom setting. After that, I check for understanding and identify other factors such as time management, test stress, etc.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I try to use what I think the student will respond to most. If the student is a very visual learner, I might focus on pictures or videos. But if the student is a kinesthetic learner, I might have them draw the pictures.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

In classes like anatomy it can be like you are reading another language. I put quite a bit of focus onto breaking the words down and understanding the individual part's meanings. That way, when the student sees it again or sees a word they don't understand, they can break it down and figure it out.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I employ multiple techniques and try to address foundational issues such as study habits and organization ,which can hinder understanding of any topic.
