I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I live in Cincinnati, OH but attend the Ohio State University. Math has been my favorite subject ever since I can remember. I attended Walnut Hills High School where I had an opportunity to participate in the Saturday Success program tutoring 7th and 8th graders in Math. I also tutored privately as time allowed. A part of my approach is to use a great deal of visual aide and provide a customized study guide to supplement tutoring sessions (which helped "D" students raise their Math grades to "B"). It gives me joy tutoring students and helping them improve their mathematical skills.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would go back to review the basics again, and give several examples (with increasing difficulty) that reinforce the concepts. I would then have the student resume solving the problems. If he or she continued to struggle, I would give a hint to guide them. In the end, I would create a study guide for them to review, along with different scenarios (if applicable) that utilize the concepts or skills.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

So far, it has been having the students come prepared with questions to ask me, or having the students attempt the problem first before asking me. Afterwards, I review the basics or go over several examples, explaining each step in great detail. Then I have the students try to solve problems on their own. I would only assist them when the students ask me (more like give hints). I also create study guides for the students that reinforce the skills or concepts and how they are used in different scenarios (if applicable).

What is your teaching philosophy?

I have the students approach me with question(s) and give little hints to help guide them. I also give analogies that they can easily relate to, draw diagrams or other images to help them better understand the concept, and create study guides for them that reinforce the concepts.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know each other first and tell them what my expectations are. Then, I simply ask if they had any particular questions to ask me or to get clarified. This is for if I am tutoring with a new student. Otherwise, I would probably ask them if they had any problems or concerns before beginning the tutoring.
