I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am very driven in my education, and would like to help others in achieving their academic goals. I am extremely patient and will work very hard to help children out with their studies. Outside of academics I love basketball, football, and baseball. Sports are certainly my main interest outside of academics, which is why I dream of being a sports agent out of law school.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session is reserved for getting to know the student as well as getting to know their work. I take time to truly get to know anybody with whom I will be working. I also like to see the strengths and weaknesses of any student with whom I will be working.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help students gain independence as a learner by really getting them to see where they struggle and how they can improve. I will always help a student in need and answer any question they have, but I do understand that I cannot be there on test day with them. After showing a student an error they have committed, I take the time to explain the correct way to go about a problem. All the while, my guiding hand will be there if they need help. Ultimately, they will learn to work on their own this way.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I always like to connect whatever subject they are doing with real life applicability. Getting a student to see the importance of a subject in school and its relevance to the real world is what will keep them on the right track. Letting a student know what opportunities getting good grades can lead to, such as a good college education is also something about which to remind a student.
