Mary
Certified Tutor
I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Southeastern University. I subsequently worked as a social worker until I returned to school. I received my Master's in History from Boise State University and my PhD from the University of Arizona. I specialize in pre-modern European cultural and gender history. I am currently a World History Instructor and teach a variety of geographical regions from the ancient to modern period.
Throughout my undergraduate and graduate careers, I have worked as a tutor. Most recently, I was a general history tutor, tutoring a number of topics such as world and US history survey courses, and thematic courses addressing topics in Latin American, European and American history. While I tutor a wide-range of topics, I am most interested in European and World history. When tutoring, I tend to build upon the knowledge that students already have about their topic. I encourage students to put themselves in the shoes of the people living during the time period and place that we are discussing. This action allows us to understand more fully the motivations and responses to events that we are studying. Making the history more personal enables us to remember ideas and facts. I also encourage the use of maps and timelines. Oftentimes, visualizing what happened helps us remember the details.
Beyond teaching, I like to read, take walks, and watch reality TV.
