Cala

Certified Tutor

Montclair State University alumna with a BA in French. I have tutored various students, high school level, university level and non-traditional. I enjoy tutoring French because I feel really comfortable at it and want to show students how beautiful the language is. I also enjoy tutoring the art of writing. In my free time, I enjoy watching anime and collecting word of wisdoms. My top 5 anime are: "Naruto, Death Note, Special A, Kimi ni Todoke and Kare Kano."

I strongly believes that learning a foreign language creates more opportunity for one; it opens more doors because you are able to understand someone else's world. Learning a foreign language makes one see the world differently, and you realize how big and diverse the world really is. By understanding someone's language, you suddenly connect with that person. "Labor inaprobus omnia vincit" meaning "Hard work conquers all."

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that everyone can learn. Some people learn differently and it is up to the instructor to adapt to the way of learning of their students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself, of course, and talk about why I am tutoring the subject and ask the student to tell why they are in need of a tutor.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Make the student believe that s/he can learn and motivate that student into learning by having him or her knowing the purpose of learning this.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Through encouragement!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find ways to make the concept appear easier to the student by using all kinds of resources.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Analyze each sentence separately then take out keywords in that sentence. To finish, put them all together and reread the sentence with different eyes.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

First, make the student feel comfortable. Once the student feels comfortable then s/he is ready to learn .

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would play a fun interactive game with the student to get him/her engaged. Once engaged, I would introduce or reintroduce the lesson and link it to the game.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have a conversation with the student and have him/her explain the material to me as if she/he was explaining it to a friend.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Have the student master the material, then use motivational words to have the student feeling good about him/herself. Then, have the student explain the material to me as if he/she was the instructor.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use YouTube videos, Spotify, celebrities, and sometimes current events. Anything that the student is familiar with, I use it to help him/her during a tutoring session.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Students tend to have different learning style. Some are visual learners; others are auditory. Since, the sessions are not too long, I ask the student if s/he is a visual learner or an auditory learner, and most of the time, they do not know in which category they fall. So, I start talking and use examples (writing on the e-board, etc.). Once I realize where they fall, I focus on tutoring them that way.
