Loreal: Tigard tutor

Certified Tutor

I am a recent medical master's graduate from the University of South Florida. I obtained my bachelors degree in Biology from the University of Florida. Currently I am applying to medical professional schools. Starting from my undergraduate career have participated in many science based youth enrichment programs providing education and positive youth development. Prior to perusing my master’s degree, I worked for the Florida Department of Health as a heath educator. I worked primarily with youth throughout the Bay County community, and served as a mentor for many students. Thus, I am comfortable with tutoring a diverse group of students from all ages and backgrounds.

Due to my love for the biological sciences I am able to tutor in many higher-level courses such as Physiology or Microbiology. Though, I am capable of tutoring other upper level science courses such as General and Organic Chemistry. I am also familiar with the IB biology courses because I took them as a high school student a few years ago (graduating with the IB diploma). I can also tutor elementary, middle, and some high school mathematics. Additionally, if a student needs a stronger foundation with the Verbal GRE I am able to help.

My tutoring style is very patient, encouraging, and informative. I understand the importance of catering my tutoring to each individual student. With my students I try to enforce the need to learn the subject, and hope to instill an excitement for the learning material.

In my spare time I love to bake and cook. I believe this stems from love of science. It is exciting to see with just a few ingredients, simple foods can transform into new complex cuisine. I also have a passion for music, and enjoy learning how to sing and play new songs on my guitar. To stay active I enjoy running, bouldering, and swimming.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I like to get a feel of my student's strengths and weaknesses first on the subject. Then I try to gauge their interests, so that the information I'm trying to teach is easy for them to relate to.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Answer any questions they have on the subject and my background first. I then ask them questions on the topic to see their relative understanding on the subject. Also, I try to set up a tutoring schedule with them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I encourage them to utilize a variety of videos or reading materials on the subject. I also ask my students to look at material before meeting with them first, so that when we first meet it is not their first time encountering the subject material. I also try to make the information interesting to them, so they don't lose interest on the subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I try to make the topic interesting to them by relating the material to their interests and hobbies.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I explain the information to them and gradually work with them to see what aspects of the topic they are struggling with. I also try to give them practice problems and continuously ask them questions on the topic until they can be more comfortable with the concept.
