What is your teaching philosophy?

I like to tailor my lessons depending on the student's needs. I ask questions to see what they are struggling with, and find creative ways to implement the material in order for the students to feel motivated and learn the subject.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During the first lesson with a student, I will assess the student's needs. I will ask what they are needing to work on and create a plan that works for them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A student can become an independent learner by creating a plan for themselves. I like to help them do this by creating a format to follow. This would include a schedule, planner, or list from which they can check things off.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I like to implement creativity and finding innovative ways to learn. This may include games, creating lists, pictures, using metaphors, or stories. Also, I like to learn about my student's interests, and also use some of those things as ideas to play with.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I take the time to listen to them and assess where they are struggling. Then I try to break down the information in order to simplify the material. I like for the student to learn at their pace, and then we can move faster as we go along.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I like to do alternate reading with them. Meaning, we would take turns, and that way they can learn to listen well as part of learning to read well.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to get to know them and for us to build a rapport. This way the student starts to feel comfortable and feel they can be themselves. This way I can learn to see what their difficulties are and help them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find creative ways for them to understand the material, and find things they are interested in to relate them to.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask them to repeat the information to me, write it down, or find a way to express it to me in their own words.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By taking small tasks and accomplishing those first. Once they see they can do and succeed at something, no matter how small, they gain the confidence to move towards bigger tasks.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I listen to them. I then look at the material they are needing to learn, and then I learn their style and how they learn best.
