I introduced the student to conics. I explained to him all the equations and important points for each one. Then we worked on some parabola problems and he was able to work through it without much trouble. He also told me that he didn't do well on his last test even though he knew the material. In this case, I would suggest he review anything he is not completely comfortable with before any exam. That also means he has to ask himself if there is any problem he feels hesitant about. Normally, he does an excellent job of this when we are working on things.

We covered precalculus subjects today, including synthetic division, long division, and finding the verities, asymptotes and intercepts of polynomial equations. The student needs a graphing calculator to check her work and understands more of the material.

We finished the student's summer review covering a little bit of everything. She and her mom said that this was their last session and they feel ok this year so far so I may or may not hear from them for more sessions this school year. She was a real pleasure to work with.

The student really did some of her best work today. She was able to get through 5 pages of homework as well as take 2 spelling pretests and review the words. I was very pleased with how well she was able to focus and how happy she was when working and getting positive results in turn. She is very confident in math and I think we can build on this confidence to help teach her different techniques for adding simple numbers. She did extremely well on her spelling and for language arts she was engaged and motivated to learn. Next tutoring session my goals are to get her to read more and to work on discerning patterns when reading.

We went over graphing inequalities on a coordinate plane, especially inequalities involving absolute values. As a way to check his work, I showed the student how to find the graph of the absolute value using translations from the base function/ graph. He breezed through much of the homework over this.
For his geometry, we went over angles, naming angles, and different types of angles. He needed a bit of a refresher, but didn't really struggle with many of the problems we went over.
