We worked on the factoring worksheets that I had sent over the weekend. Although at first he had trouble with the material, he improved and started doing really well on the harder problems as well.

Today we went over an essay that the student wrote. His writing has improved a good deal since the last time we met. Areas of focus for him are: punctuation/ capitalization, word choice, overall flow and not leaving his arguments at 80%. I assigned him another essay and we will focus on these things next time.

I spent this time helping the student through his homework sheet, making sure that he took the time to think his answers through and then check them. Afterwards, I had him take a pre-algebra diagnostic test. This told me where the weak spots in his math skills were and what we needed to review (area, slope, timed math, mind math, timed multiplication, solving for equations, fractions, integers, properties, exponents, absolute value, and combining like terms). He did a fantastic job on the diagnostic, but I made sure to take note of the skills that he even hesitated at.

I helped the student prepare for a quiz on impulse and momentum. I showed her the method of creating a before and after table of momentum, decomposing momentum vectors, and recomposing a momentum vector from its components. We looked at some conceptual questions about impulse and momentum. I stressed that the impulse can be found by either multiplying force by time or by finding the change in an object's momentum.

The student read her sight words to me. She read her book. It was a level 18 but she read very fluently! We looked at her spelling words. She wrote them down 3x each. I had her write down her sight words like a spelling test. She got 7 of them wrong, so this week we're going to work on them more. I wrote some subtraction problems down and she solved them well.

We focused on online problems and working through trinomial and binomial factorization. The student has shown great improvement so far.
