The student is working with adding and subtracting polynomial expressions. When checking her work, we discovered that she was not properly changing signs of terms when re-writing subtraction problems using a plus sign. She noticed her own mistakes as we went along and told me she understands it so much better now. We also discussed vocabulary words and the difference in their meanings (monomials, binomials, trinomials, etc.) She is maintaining an A, and says she has a test next week. She remains very motivated and dedicated to learning.

We worked through more chi-square and linear regression problems ahead of a test. Noticed the student had improved on her expected counts and checking chi-square assumptions since yesterday, so that is a definite win.

We went over problems from a practice test she had taken earlier, which included equations of circles, slope and y-intercept, distance and midpoint formulas, and finding a point after rotation about the origin. She struggled with finding the slope and y-intercept the most, but improved after I made up some practice problems for her. I encouraged her to visualize problems, use process of elimination with multiple choice questions, and to look at finding the easiest way to solve problems. Before leaving, I suggested that she work through the examples in the book since they provide step-by-step instructions in solving geometry problems. Overall, I think she has a good grasp on the concepts and continues to develop her knowledge with practice problems.

In today's session we covered chapter 19 of the text which discusses the differences of socialism and capitalism, while focusing on a few case countries to illustrate the transformation of socialist and market systems. We discussed Karl Marx and his theory of an evolution from capitalism to communism. We discussed the application of these economic systems within the context of the Chinese brand of authoritarian socialism. We discussed the importance private ownership laws to the foundation of capitalism. Finally we looked at some examples of more democratic socialist nations and welfare states such as Denmark. The student seems to do well with concepts that link the political with the economic. This session produced a great discussion, where he and I were really able to engage with these ideas and discuss the benefits and costs of the system.

We practiced the student's spelling words, did some phonics and reading comprehension. His mother is concerned that he doesn't read as well as those in his class. I used modeling as my main strategy. He had a very good attitude. At the end of the session he got all but one correct on a spelling test.

Today, we reviewed initial consonant r and l blends and short vowel sounds. We also introduced three letter beginning blends. Finally, we worked on reading comprehension with vocabulary and rereading for better understanding.
